Noumenon
Liadin Cooke 2016
Noumenon is a term describing something beyond the tangible world that can only be known or identified by the intellect. It is something we cannot experience because we cannot sense it.
This work came out of my interest in renaissance painting and how real a representation of landscape can be. Each object is an examination of a detail in a painting - places one assumes the artists were familiar with in some way or another. It is not known if any of these landscapes exist or can be experienced - but the unfired clay forms, metaphorically scooped out of the ground, enabled me to obtain a birds’ eye view of something previously intangible.
