18 Walks across Kirklees
Liadin Cooke 2022

When I was commissioned by Kirklees Council in West Yorkshire to make a work in response to the Covid pandemic, I asked people from the locality to come forward with maps of where they walked. The main body of work for the commission was the jacquard tapestry I Learned how to be a Crow and a Pigeon, but I also made this series of gouache works on paper. 18 Walks in Kirklees shows the marks made by generations of people on the landscape. Each of these works is a space where life outdoors was encountered during the Covid lockdowns, all of them gave some release in those early difficult puzzling days – they are part of where we live in Huddersfield.
